Thank you John Scarbrough and Paul Moak Subaru for your enduring impact! - Caitlin F.

Paul Moak Subaru GM John Scarbrough served as board chairman of nonprofit Friends of Children’s Hospital from 2022-2023. He recently presided over his final FCH board meeting. This occasion marked the end of 14 years of FCH board service including the past two years as Board Chairman, the past four years on the executive council, and also serving as interim executive director. During his tenure on the Board, John played a pivotal role in steering Friends of Children's Hospital toward remarkable growth and success. Throughout all of his involvement he has been a walking and talking ambassador of the Subaru Love Promise community commitment. He represents Paul Moak Subaru, Mississippi's exclusive Subaru dealership, in all he says and does. Further, he has extensively integrated Paul Moak Subaru's Share the Love Event and other dealership philanthropy with Friends of Children's Hospital. As a past Car Tag Promotions Chair John was successful in bringing on the Mississippi alumni chapters of The University of Alabama and Louisiana State University to donate proceeds from their respective Mississippi specialty license plates to FCH. Over the past 14 years, FCH car tag revenue has exceeded $5.2 million and more than 136,000 tags have been sold! One of John’s signature projects for FCH has been Over the Edge with Friends, a rappelling fundraiser event which he has chaired from 2016-2023. Paul Moak Subaru has been a sponsor, and most frequently a presenting sponsor of this event. Paul Moak Subaru staff have been members of the event steering committee. Paul Moak Subaru staff and friends have participated in the event as fundraisers, rappelers, and volunteers. Over the Edge with Friends has raised over $1.1 million over the past seven years! In the spring of 2023 John initiated a new fundraiser event for FCH, the Clays for Kids clay shooting tournament, which raised $70,000. Paul Moak Subaru staff members volunteered at the event and ensured its success as a new fundraising event. The dollar figures are quite impressive but John’s legacy will be much more significant than financial achievements. His heart, drive, wisdom, and servant leadership style has made a lasting impact to support the patients and families served by our state’s children’s hospital. Paul Moak Subaru will always be among our top companies who not only give resources to Friends of Children's Hospital but whose heart for service stands out in a category all its own. In recognition of John’s service, the FCH Board gifted him with the first FCH car tag ever issued from 2005, a bench in front of the children’s hospital will be dedicated to John in recognition of his service, and a tree in the Rainbow Garden will be dedicated to Jeanne and John in memory of their son Hudson Scarbrough. Congratulations on an incredible job well done, John! Thank you for living out the Subaru Love promise and impacting countless lives along the way!

Paul Moak Subaru Sponsors Jackson State University Alumni Athletes - Rebecca M.

Jackson State University is a public institution that was founded in 1877. As Mississippi's largest historically black colleges and universities, it is located on 220 acres in the city of Jackson with an undergraduate enrollment of almost 5,000 students. The JSU athletic alumni association is a group comprised of Jackson State University alumni athletes from all intercollegiate sports. It exists to provide support to JSU, specifically the JSU Division of Athletics. For members, it is a great way to reconnect with old teammates and meet generations of former athletes. Paul Moak Subaru continued its sponsorship of the JSU Alumni Athletes by financially sponsoring its annual golf tournament. Hundreds of alumni and friends participated and raised funds to allow the association to host events and invest resources in current student athletes. Paul Moak Subaru is proud to help support such a worthwhile group!

Paul Moak Subaru Sales Consultants Donate Freezer to Mississippi Veterans Hospital - Rebecca M.

Two members of Paul Moak Subaru's sales department are proud US military veterans. Daniel Snellgrove is active with the MS National Guard and Adam Barnett is a Navy veteran who regularly volunteers with Mississippi's VA Hospital located in Jackson. The hospital and its clinics provide quality, patient-centered healthcare to more than 54,000 enrolled Veterans throughout 53 counties in Mississippi. The hospital's food pantry, affectionally known as Freedom Foods, was designed to provide perishable and non-perishable goods to Veterans who may be experiencing hardship. When the community relations manager mentioned to Paul Moak Subaru Sales Consultant Adam Barnett that the hospital's food pantry was in need of a freezer, he told them he would be happy to help figure out a solution. When he got back to the dealership he shared the news about the freezer with fellow Subaru Sales Consultant Daniel Snellgrove. Daniel had recently moved and happened to have a freezer available that was not being used. Without hesitating Daniel offered to donate the freezer to the VA Hospital food pantry! The food pantry staff were overjoyed that a freezer became available so quickly which greatly limited any food going to ruin. Thank you, Daniel and Adam for jumping into action and doing this good deed which exemplifies the Subaru Love Promise community commitment. We respect and appreciate your service!

Subaru Loves Learning Teacher Donations - John S.

Back to school season has a new meaning around Paul Moak Subaru due to the Subaru Loves Learning campaign. August began the dealership’s third year as an Adopt-A-School sponsor for North Jackson Elementary School within the Jackson Public School District. Six teachers, one from each grade at the school Pre-K through 5th grade, were selected as the 2023 recipients of the Paul Moak Subaru $500 grants through AdoptAClassroom.org. Teachers are able to purchase curriculum aids and teaching materials to enhance their student’s learning experiences. North Jackson Elementary Principal Jocelyn Smith said of the Subaru Loves Learning donations, “We are extremely grateful for the generous donation from Paul Moak Subaru and what this means to us I really can’t even express. Our teachers love teaching so much, that they often go into their own pockets. Having this donation makes it easier for our teachers to provide outside of the box activities for young people we might not otherwise have a chance to do.” Congratulations to teachers Hannah Roberts, Sandra Owens, LaToya Young, Lakisha Primer, Shanta Sanders, and Janika Leak for being our 2023 Subaru Loves Learning honorees! On September 12th Paul Moak Subaru team members Richard Holden, Troy Mallett, Rebecca McCarty, Paul G. Moak, Jr., and John Scarbrough, delivered special Subaru Loves Learning classroom supply boxes to each teacher and learned exciting updates about the school’s performance from the previous school year. We look forward to another great year ahead being involved with North Jackson Elementary!

Paul Moak Subaru Sponsors "Puppy Picks" on Local News - Rebecca M.

Beginning in September with the start of the NFL season, Paul Moak Subaru sponsors a weekly “Puppy Picks” segment on the WDBD/Fox 40 Thursday 9 p.m. newscast. Each week, the dealership's partner shelter CARA selects a dog to spotlight and JC Patterson of WDBD films a segment with the dog where he interacts with the dog on camera and gives viewers background information, as well as characteristics about the dog’s personality and needs. The segment ends with the dog picking a “winner” of that week’s NFL on FOX game—two bowls of treats, each marked with a team name, are on set and the bowl the dog goes to first is deemed that week’s “puppy’s pick!” All of us at Paul Moak Subaru are proud to sponsor this segment so that the amazing pets at CARA get a chance to reach are larger audience.

Santa's Helpers...Paul Moak Subaru Donates Christmas Stockings for Children in Need - Dawn J.

For the second year Paul Moak Subaru provided Christmas stockings to students at our adopted school North Jackson Elementary School whose families need a little extra support this holiday season. Each homeroom teacher nominated a student from his or her classroom and the Paul Moak Subaru elves got busy shopping for candy, personal hygiene items, toys, and school supplies to fill a stocking for each student. It’s a heartwarming way to share Christmas joy to very deserving children who will hopefully be surprised and delighted to receive their very own (and very full!) Christmas stocking. Adopt A School Sponsor Liaison Dawn Jones picked up the stockings from Subaru team members at Paul Moak Subaru on December 13th.

Paul Moak Subaru Sponors Pet Parade & Contest for WellsFest 39th Year! - Peggy H.

Thanks to Paul Moak Subaru for once again sponsoring Wells Fest! Our annual festival wouldn't be the same without Paul Moak Subaru's financial support and presence at the festival! The pet theme for Subaru Loves Pets works perfectly for Paul Moak's sponsorship of the pet parade and pet contest. The dogs dressed up, paraded, got petted, gobbled treats and enjoyed all the good things pups can do at the Wells Fest Music and Children’s Festival in Jackson, Mississippi, all under the shadow of a giant blow-up Labrador retriever from Paul Moak Subaru. Paul Moak Subaru helped make sure the pups and their people were a major fun part of this year’s Wells Fest, much to the delight of children and adults alike who lined up to take pictures under the big lab puppy. For 39 years, Wells Fest has provided families in the metro Jackson, Mississippi, area a day of good music and fun on the last Saturday of September. Along with the pet parade that kicks off the festival, dog lovers and their pets also enjoyed visiting the Paul Moak Subaru tent where doggy toys were given out throughout the day. Subaru also shared its space with CARA, a local animal shelter that helped with pet adoptions. At the conclusion of the parade, there was a blessing of the pets followed by the official kick-off of the festival and the music acts. Festival-goers got a chance to name the Subaru Labrador retriever blowup puppy for a prize. Proceeds from the event are donated to a different local non-profit every year, with $1.5 million raised for non-profits over the years. This year the proceeds totaled over $40,000 and were donated to Operation Shoestring to support afterschool and summer programs for more than 150 school-aged neighborhood children and youth as well as wellness and health-equity programs for their parents. “What a blessing WellsFest is and what an opportunity it provides to give back to the community,” said Chris Cumbest, pastor of Wells United Methodist Church. "We are especially grateful to Paul Moak Subaru for their longtime support of WellsFest and their ensuring that our event is pet friendly and welcoming to all family members.

Dolly Adoption Story for Subaru Loves Pets Month! - Denise C.

Paul Moak Subaru has supported CARA for 13 years and we can't say enough about what your support has meant to our pet shelter. The number of pet lives and human lives touched is hard to quantify. We were able to adopt out 31 animals in October 2023 for Subaru Loves Pets month. I wanted to share one adoption story with Subaru Love Promise: This Adoption Story is about Turtle. He was found by a young boy just off a busy highway along the wood line near a gas station. The store clerks told the boy that this poor emaciated dog had somehow been surviving for months in those woods. Turtle’s rescuer couldn't leave him there and even had hopes of being allowed to keep this skinny dog, but his parents weren’t keen on the idea, so he surrendered him to CARA and the staff named him Turtle. He was badly emaciated and had obviously been in distress when we came into the Shelter, but his tail never stopped wagging and his eyes lit up every time you spoke to him. The Staff set him up in one of our front rooms to decompress, and we’ve never seen a dog who treasured his soft bed as much as Turtle did. It was so hard to imagine how such an amazing dog could end up unwanted and living the way he was. We started to process of getting him vetted and fattened up. Jayne is a very special lady that we are proud to call a part of our CARA tribe. Jayne took home a much-loved shelter long-timer named Picadilly almost three years ago as a hospice foster. Picadilly had cancer, and at her age, even trying to treat was not an option. We knew (thought) her time would be short, and Jayne took her home to show her the good life for whatever time she had left. That time amazingly turned into 2 1/2 years. Jayne was now ready to get help dog and came by after work one day to meet Turtle -- it was love at first site!!! He was so happy to load up and go home with her that evening! It’s really very difficult to try to say which one loves the other the most. Well, that foster turned to a permanent adoption, and Turtle is now Samson! He’s put on enough weight and made enough of a comeback that he was safely neutered and is undergoing Heartworm treatment. Samson’s new Mom, as well as his shelter family, would greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers as he goes through the treatment. He came a long way in the month he was at the Shelter, and he’s now doing amazingly in his new home. Jayne, we sincerely hope you know how ecstatic we are that you have another CARA pup! Samson, you have hit the lottery, sweet boy! Moms don’t come better than your new Mom, but you already know that don’t you? Yours is certainly a rag to riches story, and proof that there is always a reason to keep the faith and be hopeful. We love you to the moon and back, and we couldn’t possibly be happier for you. Again, thank you, Paul Moak Subaru for allowing many stories like this to happen due to your ongoing financial and in-kind support. CARA loves Paul Moak Subaru!!

Paul Moak Subaru Loves Pets at CARA! - Denise C.

Once again Paul Moak Subaru has supported Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA) for the Subaru Loves Pets campaign and we excited to share we adopted over 31 dogs and cats again this year! The $100 donation from Paul Moak Subaru for each of these adoptions will help our shelter continue to care for homeless animals and provide them the medical and mental attention they need to get them adopted into loving homes. The Subaru new parent kits are always a big hit to our adopters and their new fur babies! This year we have also been able to show off our pets on the local news thanks to the Fox40 Puppy Picks sponsored by Paul Moak Subaru—thank you for going above and beyond to help us save animals and bring families love and joy they could have never imagined feeling! We are honored to be selected as your hometown pet shelter partner and have a great time working with all of you at the dealership. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Paul Moak Subaru!

Bella Finds Love Again - Denise C.

This year during the Share A Love Campaign this adoption was too good not to share! Big Bella… Meet our beautiful Bella! This sweet girl was left tied to CARA's fence with a note about how much she was loved, and I will tell you… We’re pretty sure she was loved. She came in angry at the world, she didn’t understand, plus it was bad weather the night she was left there. Weighing in at 103 lbs, it was clear she had been fed well and had been happy somewhere. Bella was angry, and she made sure everyone knew it. Add to that the fact that Bella’s breed doesn’t do well in a shelter environment to begin with. The entire time she was with us, she made sure we remembered that she wasn’t there by choice, and she would have preferred to have been anywhere but there. She was bossy and a little scary, if you didn’t know her well and call her bluff, though she never bit a soul. That can be hard to work with in a shelter environment. She was hard to read where other dogs were concerned, because again, she wasn’t where she was supposed to be. She was that dog who would scream at you from across the way, really because she wanted your attention, but you would have sworn she wanted to eat you. In short, we knew we needed to tread slowly and extremely carefully in placing our big girl. But we sure were hopeful that once she met her people, she would be the dog that we believed she could be. Fast forward, a couple inquired about her, and we were so stoked in high hopes that this could be our girl’s chance. It was a couple that we knew of through someone who knew someone…. You know that drill, but we also knew they had definite Rottie experience, and that was our requirement, that she would only go to someone with proven experience. They definitely had that. Then the app came in… Young children visited the home regularly, 4’ fence, and had other dogs. Boom. There was that huge ‘Oh gosh! How in the world… !!’ Tina was persistent, though. Without even meeting her in person, she knew Bella was supposed to be her dog. We wanted so much to see our girl get out of there and into a real home, a loving home, one in which she could be the dog we knew she was supposed to be. So we finally made an appointment with Tina and Jason to come and meet her! The instant Bella saw Tina, it was like she had just spotted her long-lost Mom. she climbed up in Tina’s lap and licked her entire head, snuggled in with her, what we saw literally brought us to our knees. We’ve seen Bella be okay with a few people, but we’ve never seen our girl respond to anyone like she did to Tina. She normally loves to romp in the dog park, but that day, she just wanted to stay beside Tina. Concerns were addressed, lots of discussion, but honestly, the dog in the park with Tina and Jason was not the dog we had in the shelter for a year and a half. Not even close. Fast forward, Bella is now living large in her new home! She loves the grandchildren, does great with the other dogs, and the short fence we were afraid could be an issue… Bella has absolutely no reason to even give a thought to leaving her new home and family. She is a three-year-old toddler who is in love with her world and her people. Wouldn’t surprise us one bit to learn that she doesn’t even remember her time spent with us as a shelter dog. Bella, just WOW!! If you aren’t everything and more that we were so hopeful you could be! You won’t have to fear losing your place in life again, sweet girl. You are right where you are supposed to be, and we are certain that’s where you’ll spend the rest of your days. Thank you for the lessons, sweet girl. You taught them well. Always love, Big Bella. ??

Speed man - Hannah P.

My dad was looking in face book one day and found the adoptable pet of the week and it was our sweet speedo. We already have 2 yorkie and just had to have him. Turns out he was 11 years old and heart worm positive and had congestive heart failure. This did not stop us from wanting him. So we put in a application and once it got accepted we made a meet and greet for that day. Michael (my father) fell in love with him. While they were there they learned his story and how in febuary he was found in a pool in the freezing cold and has been at the shelter since. After that we decided he couldn’t spend his last few years in a shelter he had to come home with us. And he did now he is living his life in a home full of love and attention. He loves to chase his little brother Bentley through the house and try to play with Maggie. He is very hard head at times but he is the sweetest boy.
